Mi domando perchè, in tutti gli anni di scuola che ho fatto, io non abbia mai sentito parlare di questo grandioso scienziato croato del secolo scorso! Fu inventore di tantissime cose che tutt'oggi utilizziamo e, tra l'altro, ebbe una morte misteriosa che fa pensare che avesse veramente scoperto un'altra cosa spettacolare (o disatrosa)....perchè l'FBI tiene ancora segrete le sue ultime carte? Inoltre, povero Tesla, fu lui il vero inventore della Radio...Marconi non fece che continuare i suoi studi. Almeno questo è quanto è emerso dalla puntata di Mercoledi 29 ottobre di Voyager. La mia domanda è semplicemente "perchè a scuola non mi è stato mai nemmeno nominato?".
Forse dovrei guardarmi il film "Il segreto di Nikola Tesla". E lo consiglio. Devo dire che quel servizio ha attirato la mia attenzione. Perchè qualcuno venga paragonato a Leonardo da Vinci deve veramente avere qualcosa di speciale...

Hi guys!
The week with my ladybirds (scouts) is over and now it's time to see the photos and to reflect on this experience...
here you find some photos of the staff in "the Lion King version" and me, in particular, transformed in Rakifi. Do you like it? children were really nice with their dresses of animals of the savannah: zebras, crocodiles, Panteras, monkeys, giraffes...and one Nandù! This wonderful film gave us the possibilities to live incredibles adventures and strong emotions and, as scout, I advice to use it as theme for other expeiences. It is full of values and positive images and it contributes to create a wonderful clima among "the animals of the savannah"!

L'estate avanza....gli esami quasi quasi finiscono e tu pensi di essere in vacanza...chiudi gli occhi e sogni il mare francese...ma all'improvviso SOBBALZI! no, prima del mare c'è un altro evento, ancora un bel po' da organizzare e soprattutto un'occasione di tutto fuorchè di relax.....
Il campo estivo! o, per meglio dire, le "vacanze" si cerchio...già, per loro vacanze! Last month I installed in my Dell XPS Ubuntu (linux). I delated Microsoft Vista and I'm really satisfied with this choice! Ubuntu works very well and now my pc is fast as it should be!

My English Literature course

Hello everybody!

I want to present you the English Literature course I attended this year at the University because it was really well structured and especially it was about an interesting topic. I had never studied this aspect of English Literature before and I really appreciated it! The course, called "Contemporary English Literature", was indeed about African Literature in English, that is post-colonial thinking and varius kinds of Literature in English. In the first part of the course we were supposed to read three books: Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart (1958), Tsitsi Dangarembga, Nervous Conditions (1988), Caryl Phillips, Crossing the River (1994). I suggest to read these three books to who is interested in this topic because it is really interesting read something from African authors and about colonization.

The second part of the course, called " Culture and Cinema in the Black Atlantic", was different from the normal Italian structure of University courses: we developed this topic through the watching of five films. Moreover, some professors from foreign Universities came to introduce and than comment these films so it was really interesting.

This was the programm:

- Prof. Patrick Williams (Univ. of Nottingham Trent - lesson (on questions of cultural memory & authenticity) + film “Yeelen” di Souleymane Cisse.

- Prof. Patrick Williams (Univ. of Nottingham Trent) - lesson (on diaspora) + film “Soleil O” di Med Hondo.

- Prof. Ashley Dawson (CUNY) lesson + film “Young Soul Rebels”di Isaac Julien (UK 1991).

- Prof. Anna Scacchi lesson + film “Daughters of the Dust” di Julie Dash (USA 1991).

- Prof. Annalisa Oboe, lesson + lesson “Come Back, Africa” di Lionel Rogosin (USA/South Africa 1959).

I advice students to follow this course next year if it will be possible because it has been a great opportunity for me to discover a new kind of English Literature!!

Hi guys!!

It's May and our English course is over...It's time to think and reflect on it and see if I have learned something new! This semester was about culture and the way we look at differences in culture. Well, there's too much to say! First of all, I want to thank the members of my group - Selena, Caterina, Chiara and Corina, my American peer - for their kindness and dedication for the creation of our wikipage about Healthcare problems in Italy and in the USA. This week we were supposed to think about our way of living this exchange with American students and if and how this exchange helped us in changing our attitudes to different cultures. Obviously, we also had to reflect is this experience has been useful to improve our language skills. Thus, we made a questionnaire considering the state of our ICC (intercultural competence) in order to explain our thoughts about this topic.

In this wikipage you can find my answers to the questionnaire about my experience of the exchange with Dickinson University but here I will try to summaryze them. The first part of the questionnaire is about my feeling, knowledge and actions during the exchange:
Skype gave me the possibility to speak with an American girl, Corina, and I appreciated this possibility because, speaking with her, I discovered something new about American lifestyle and University life. I was very interested in her kind of life and we indeed spent lot of time taking about this kind of topic. I also liked serching information about American healthcare system because it was a new topic for me. The converstions were very pleasant and funny and we have never had misunderstandings or unconfortable situations. I discovered something new about American lifestyle and university life and, as far as our wikipage is concerned, I was happy to improve my knowledge about American healthcare system because we always think that it has no problems but actually it has.

The second part of the questionnaire was entitled "A self assesment of my Intercultural experience": with my peer Corina I talked about her lifestyle, healthcare system and immigration. These topics helped me in changing my point of view because it is not always easy to understand a different cultural situation if you only have your personal experience in mind. Moreover, while I searched for iformation on the oilitical campaign I was surprised by their way of "living" politics because it is very different from our way of seeing and interacting with it: this aspect helped me to change my point of view.

The third part of the questionnaire was "Self-assesment of my language learning": through this exchange I learned some particular words and expression linked with the specific field of healthcare and I surely improved my oral skills: it was not always easy to understand Corina and, on the other hand, I can say that it has been the first time in five University years, that I had the opportunity to speak with a native speaker so directly, so it was a really good experience for my speaking skills. Moreover, I learned how to speak Italian with a non-native speaker. The wiki give me the possibility to read many articles and essays about heathcare and I can say that, through this project I improved my reading and writing skills as well.

This is the end of the course...a long and interesting course which made me learn lots of useful things, not only from a linguistic point of view but also from a technological and cultural one. I want to thank all my peers and my teacher for this course and, even if it gives me only 3 credits, I think it has been very useful.

I love Skype!

Hi guys!

This week I used for the first time Skype! What an experience!! I really love it! I spoke with an American student, Corine, for more or less one hour and I really enjoyed it! It is easy and fast and the best thing is that you do not pay! After this conversation, I’ve downloaded Skype at home and now I use Skype to speak with my friends too! I liked speaking with Corine because, even if we didn’t know each other, we spoke without problems and we discovered something new and interesting about our culture. Our discourse was supposed to be on the immigration and on the topic for our final project, and actually it was. But we also spoke about us, our life and our interests so now I can say that we know something more about eachother. It was a nice conversation! This tool is really useful and I think I will use it even more in the future!

Italy and USA compared

Hello everybody!

This week I have to think about an issue that I would like to analyze both from Italian and American point of view. More specifically, I have to compare the situation about this theme in these two countries. Well, I say that there is an aspect which I'm very interested in because it is a bit complicated and I've not so much information about. I'm speaking about health care system.

In Italy the situation about health care system is ot so good and it is one of the most debated issues of this period. However, I've not a so clear idea of how it is structured and organized. Moreover, I think that the situation that TV presents to us is not so right.

As far as USA are concerned, I really don't have good information about health care system: the only think that I know is that in America "only who has money can be healed" which is the general idea that Italian people have. However, I don't think this is right and so, I wont to know something more specific about it!!

What is going on with the elections...

Hello everybody!!

In Italy political elections are closer and closer and the situation is really sad: politicians continue to accuse the others and they rarely speak about serious problems. The main discussions of these last days is the “problem” whether to participate or not to TV programs…sometimes they seem to behave worse than children. Another important discussion of these days is the situation of Alitalia and I really hate it because they use it for their campaign (all the candidates) and I’m sure that, as soon as elections are finished, no one will speak f Alitalia with all this interest. Moreover, the situation of this company is not a surprise: it is in these conditions from a lot of time, but they seem to have discovered this problem only now. They only think to their personal interests.
As far as American elections are concerned, all newspaper talk about them with the same intensity and the main battle is still between Clinton and Obama. The discussions are about war and the problem of race. I think here the situation is more or less the same because elections are not so near as they are in Italy.

Hello everybody!

The goal of Intercultural competence implies the idea of understanding the differences and similarities among a number of countries, not only between U.S.A and Italy. For this reason, I’ve looked for different points of view and ways to present the topic of Italian and American elections in three foreign newspapers (in their online version): The Times, Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung and Le Figaro. In this way I wanted to compare the importance given by European countries to this two elections and I admit that I didn’t like so much the result! I discovered indeed that these three newspapers don’t give importance to Italian political situation while they give a lot of space to the American elections. I admit that this is quite comprehensible because U.S.A has an important role for all the world while Italy a is not so important, but I thought that they give importance to Italian elections because it is an European country. I was wrong!

The French newspaper Le Figaro has a special section called “élections USA 2008” through which you arrive on a web page with a number of information, videos, surveys and so on but you can find it under “international”. The German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has a special section, too under “Politics”. It calls “Wahl in America” and here you find a table with the primaries’ results and a lot of other information. In the English The Times, under “World news”, there are sections called “US elections” and I found only one article about the fight between Berlusconi and Veltroni. In Le Figaro the latest article about Italy regards the decision of Prodi to leave Politics and it is dated 03-11-2008.

As far as images are concerned I noticed that Le Figaro and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung have an image for each article, while The Times has an image only for the first article of the page, while many of the others have not. All these three newspapers use the same kind of images that is the faces of the candidates: obviously it is quite normal in political campaigns because people have to know the candidate and it is thus important their face.

Hi! The second semester of the English course has started and I will continue to work on my English learning process through the e-ctivities that will be proposed to us. The main goal of this part of the course is to develop our intercultural competence and so…let’s start comparing the two right candidates for the elections in Italy and in the United States!: Silvio Berlusconi and John McCain.

I’ve listened carefully to many videos of their discourses and I’ve noticed some similarities and some peculiarities of these two politicians. As far as their behaviour and attitude are concerned, they both give the idea to be sure of their selves and they tend to speak with loud voice and to articulate words clearly, highlighting some of them with pauses, a louder voice and going slower. Berlusconi uses more hand gestures than McCain and they both are serious while they speak about their program and smiling while they speak about the future.

McCain has the purposes to cut wasteful spending and to keep taxes low but in his discourses he also promises more security by fighting Islamic terrorism, more economic development and changes. He tends to give importance to the value of nation and he often repeat the words proud, free, safe. I think he counts on the sense of nationality that is typical of Americans. For example he uses sentences as “we are American” or “we can, we must, we will”. He also speak about Iraq war but he doesn’t gives so much importance to the situation of the families such as Berlusconi do. It’s important to notice that there are some important men who endorse him such as Bush and Giuliani.
I’ve noticed that he often uses the word “fight” and “challenge” that is a military language.

Berlusconi proposes more development for the world of work, more production and thus more economic development (such as McCain). He also promises to help young people and families that are two big problems of Italy in this period. He tends to begin his speeches by accusing the other political wing and than he proposes his program. Such as McCain, he wants to cut wasteful spending of the state, to cut taxes and to assure more security (in this case not against Islamic terrorism but against immigration).

In general I can say that while McCain counts not only on his program but also on his personality and on his values , Berlusconi doesn’t give much importance to his personal history or values but he focalizes his attention on what he wants to better in Italy. I think the explanation for this difference is the fact that Italians have no more confidence on the Italian politicians, while Americans have.

Personal Learning Environments

What is PLE??? I had never heard of it before! Every lesson we discover something new! Last week we spoke about Persoonal Learning Environments. It is based on the idea that we never finish learning in our life and, especially, that we learn from each context! As I saw in Bloggingenglish studies (Cross, 200) have shown that only 20% of our learning actually takes place in institutional contexts whereas the remaining 80% takes place outside of the classroom in different periods of one’s life; I completely agree with this idea and I also think that a person's ability - more or less in all fields - cannot be judged just by his/her formal studies. You can have the most important degree but if you don't learn from other experiences, spaces, people, you are not so wise. PLE permits to create your personal map in order to have a clear idea of your learning spaces and means!

As far as language is concerned, this is my Personal Learning Environments :

I have founf five different areas for my language learning: People, formal learning, experiences, storing information, gathering information.

PEOPLE:
In this area I list all the people with which I generally speak English. This aspect is very important because to
think of knowing a language and actually speak it, are two different things! Unfortunately, I don't speak often English here in Italy but I think that we should make use of all the occasions we have!

FORMAL LEARNING:
In this area I put all the formal moments in which I trained my English. As far as University is concerned, I specified the most important areas in which I improved my English. I also included my thesis because, doing it, I learnt a lot from language point of view too!

EXPERIENCES:
Life is full of experinces which are like a treasure for our knowledge! Here I put travels, thanks to which I spoke a lot and I come into contact with real language and life situations, work, and learning from my own mistakes!

STORING INFORMATION:
Here I list the tools which help me to store my important information.

GATHERING INFORMATION:
In this area I list all the other means by which I improve my English. They are songs, movies, books, podcasts, the Internet and so on. I think they are very important for me because they help you in learning by having fun!

In Internet we trust...or not?

When I have to search something on the Web for academic purposes, such as writing an essay or similar, I'm usually a bit sceptical about what I find because on the Internet there are too many things, to many authors, too many articles, too many ideas! The problem - but also the beautiful aspect of the Internet - is that anyone can publish or write something and the reader cannot easily understand if the information is trustworthy or not. If one day someone want to frighten all the world with an invented information, he/she has just to write something on a Web site!!! The same is for the information we search: are they serious or not?

Usually, when I look for information on the Web I check the author of the site: if it is an association, a well known personality or just someone unknown. I admit that the look of the site influences my idea about its seriousness. If I see a well structured site and, on the other hand, a simple and not accurate page, I choose the first one. I don't usually loom if the author is clearly shown or if there is his e-mail. Sometimes I look at the last up-date of the page, but not always.

The sites which I visited on this topic gave me some interesting points on which I should think the next time I'm looking for something on the Web.
For example, I had never thought to the possibility of looking at the Document Uniform Resource Locator (URL), including an institutional identifier. Moreover, I had never looked if there is a bibliography or if there is the indication of the source of the information. Another interesting point I had never thought about is what the purpose of the site is, or who the audience intended is. I think these are important things because we have to have a critical eye before to accept everything from the Web.

I found this site http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html which I think interesting and it contains, on its URL ".edu" so it indicates that it is an educational institution. Try to have a look at it!!

Hi! I want to be sincere with you: it is really difficult to find a video for me in this period...it is not one of the easiest periodS of my life! So plese, don't consider this video a representation of my personality, but simply something I need in this moment! I have to be strong!!! So sometimes I listen to this song to find strength! I'm sure I will be better in a few time!

In the future I will search a video that represents me..for example something to laugh or something that recalls the fact of staying together with lots of people...for the moment...I need to be STRONG ENOUGH!! ;)

What do I think about Youtube? I don't know...if on one hand I can say that it is funny and interesting because you can find videos about everything, on the other hand I think it is not so useful because there are so many stupid videos.
One can spend a lot of time in searching a video he/he needs before to find the right one because there are too many videos...probably there should be a control system or something similar (I'm not an expert of Youtube so I don't know if it is already so). However, it is also a mean of communication and every kind of people can publish something on it so..probably I should erase my prejudices!! If you want to have fun and if you have time, it is the right place!!
Obviously you can also find interesting and good videos on it but, for this case, TeacherTube is better! Here you can find very interesting videos who teach you something...every kind of topic, every kind of level! I really like it!! For students like us, there are
some interesting videos for language leaning but there also many other interesting topics!
We have discovered a new tool that can be useful for our English...at the end of this course we should speak as well as a mother tongue speakers!!!;)

Hi guys!
This week we discovered the world of Podcasts..I had never heard them before, but now we have another mean of learning! I spent lot of time in the world of podcast and, at the end, I chose these three sites:

The first one contains lots of interesting material for the learning of English with audio files but the thing that I mostly like are "audiobooks". I think that they are very interesting and useful and one can put together his/her love for reading with his/her intention to improve his/her English.
The second one gives several podcasts on different topics and you can choose your level. However, it gives also worksheets, vocabulary tasks etc only for members.
The third has a great number of podcasts too and they are divided for level and subject. The negative thing is that, sometimes, some podcasts have problems and I could not listen to them. These podcasts are mostly created by teachers so, I think the quality is good.
In my opinion, podcasts are useful but they should be always followed by exercises on the text, so one could effectively check his/her skills.

Hi!!
Every week we discover a new technology! Last week we used an online bookmarker, Del.icio.us. Actually, it is a social bookmarker because, thanks to this site, you can not only see always (if you are not using your pc) your favourite sites or blogs, but it also gives you the possibility to share with other people them and to see other person's preferences. So, you can use it as a "filter" for your researches because you see which are the most visited and "posted" sites by the other users. I like the fact that you have tags and so, when you visit another person's page, you see all the topics he is interested in. This could allow you to extend your research with other linked topics! Maybe, Del.icio.us is not very easy to use at the beginning and, for example, for the first site I posted, I put a comma after my "key words" (tags) and so now, I have some problems with my tags (but the site explained how to correctly write! I admit that it was my error). Another problem I have with Del.icio.us is that my descriptions are three lines long but you cannot see entirely them. I liked to see my classmates' sites because they are useful and they show how much we try to learn English!!! ;-) Moreover, I could understand some of their interests and what they like. In the future, when we will add other sites, del.icio.us will become a way to know each other!!

comments on feeds and feed aggregators

Hi!
Yesterday, during the lesson, we learned how to use feeds and feed aggregators. In particularly, we used Bloglines and, although at the beginning it seemed difficult , after few minutes of disorientation we reached our goal!! Now, each one of us can log in on Bloglines and, without spending so much time, can easily see if his/her “favourite” blogs or sites have been updated! Obviously, in our cases, our “favourite” blogs are those of the people of our group and so, for the moment, they are not so much, but we could see the positive aspects of this technology already! Thanks to Bloglines we can see on one single page if our favourite blogs have been updated and it is surely a saving in time! For somebody, it can be a small saving in time but for me..it is completely another way of working! At home I have in fact a very, very, very slow computer (not only it is old, but it also has a slow internet connection) and, in order to open a blog, it can spend also 1 or 2 minutes…you can imagine how wonderful is to navigate in this conditions! The simple procedure of opening four blogs can transform a good day in a awful one! But now, just opening one single page, I can see directly if my classmates’ blogs updated their blogs, so I can avoid to open those which have not been updated!! It is simply fantastic! Instead of spending 8 minutes, I spend only 2!!  In conclusion, I’m happy to have learn this possibility of the web (I had never heard of it before) not only because I have learned something new that I can use, but also because it is really useful for me! Thank you Bloglines!!!

after two weeks of blogging...

Hi! In the last two weeks I was not here in Padua (I was abroad) so I couldn't use the
computer...the return at the University was a shok for me because I discovered that all the other students had their personal blogs! I didn't know how to do it! But than I discovered that it is easy and so, as you all can see, I created my personal blog! I think that the use of blogs for an English (or, obviously, for any other language) course is a great idea! First of all because it make studes improve their writing skills, and it gives the possibility to recive comments. Thanks to these comments a student can recive suggestions, opinions and can see how to correct his mistakes. Moreover, the use of blog is useful because if a student ask something to the teacher, she can answer using a post in the course blog and, in this way, all the students can read her answer and avoid to repeat the same question. Now I don't know so much about blogs but I'm sure that I will lern and that it will became a useful learning mean! I'm very happy to use a blog for this course because I have never used one before! I'm satisfied!
I hope blogs will be useful for our English!

I'm Elisa, I'm 23 and I study in Padua University. I will use this blog in my English course in order to improve my English. To present me I've chosen this image Fried Rice and now I explain why..
I know that the photo I chose is a bit strange, but it represents some aspects of my personality.
The first reason is the most obvious: I really love rice!! It can be cooked in any the way you want, but I always love it! When I am alone at home and I must decide what to eat, I often cook rice although it requires a bit of work. Obviously, I often cook it also for my family, and they always appreciate it.
The second reason is linked with the first one because I love cooking. I cook every day for my family but it is not a problem for me because, when I cook, I feel relaxed and I don't think to other problems or things that I have to do. I love cooking everything, and I often make some "experiments" with my fantasy and using the food I have at home in that moment...I admit that they are not always a success!! However, I think that I can be considered Ia quite good cook!
There's also another reason why I chose this photo: I love water and, as you all know, rice grows in water. I really love everything related with water. For example, I am not a sporty type but the only sport I like is swimming. Moreover, I love sea, the sensation of water in the skin and the sound that you hear when you are under water. When I find beautiful sea or lake landscapes I cannot resist to the temptation to take a photo of them!
I could spend lots of words to talk about me but I just say these three things to give an idea of my personality! You will know me better during this English course!
